TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOU
I’m Erin Moys, a freelance makeup artist specializing
in luxury wedding makeup. I grew up in Hertfordshire but moved to Essex 3 years ago where I live with my boyfriend. As a person I am a complete perfectionist. I have a very calm and relaxed nature which I feel is vital in this industry as putting your trust in another person to do your makeup can feel nerve-wracking and especially so on a day as special as your wedding. You want to look and feel your most beautiful but also look and feel like yourself. @Makeupby_erin
With over 8 years of experi- ence in the beauty industry, I am an artist that carefully listens to my clients preferences and will give honest opinions about which direc- tion I think the look should take.
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED & WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER YOUR BRIDES? I’m located in Chelmsford, Essex where I have an outbuilding I work from doing bridal trials and event makeup, however I also have a makeup studio based at my parent’s house in Royston, Hertfordshire. I cover the whole of the UK as well as worldwide destinations for bridal bookings. I offer makeup services for all occasions including proms, photoshoots and events.
However, weddings are my true passion and I love nothing more than making brides look and feel beautiful. Aswell as being trained in makeup, I am also trained in LVL lash lifts which is also so popular with my Brides as not everyone likes the idea of wearing fals- ies on their wedding day - so this is a great alternative!
WHAT IS YOUR MOST REQUESTED LOOK? TRENDS YOU SEE BECOMING POPULAR? I feel like these past couple of years makeup trends have changed so much! I think since the covid lockdowns a lot of people have taken a more natural approach with their makeup and beauty regimes. It’s like every- ones taken a step back and it’s more about enhancing your natural features maybe with a lightweight dewy foundation, highlighter on the cheekbones and individual lashes rather than the years prior which was which was all about full glam; super contoured skin, cut crease eyeshadow and matte liquid lipsticks. I absolutely love this “natural glow” upcoming makeup trend and feel like I’ve finally found my signature look with it. The most requested look I get asked to do is glowy bronzed skin, champagne shimmery eyes with a soft brown smokey wing and a satin nude/pink lip. If the Bride has a strapless dress I also love finish- ing the look with a dewy highlighter on the decolletage, collarbones and shoulders. This looks stunning in photographs!
HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR BRIDE CHOOSE THE PERFECT MAKEUP STYLE? When booking we will always schedule a trial run appointment for the Bride and any mem- bers of the Bridal party if she wishes. Bridal trials take a 2 hour slot and other Bridal party members are 1.5 hours slot. This allows us plenty of time to talk through the timings of the day, take a look at makeup inspiration photos the Bride has saved as well as looking at photos of her dress, flowers and venue - this is all so I can get an understanding of her style. When booking a trial I send over a guide to help the Bride feel as prepared as possible and to ensure that we can make the most out of the trial run. For example the guide includes some tips on creating a moodboard specific to their wedding makeup. Pinterest is amazing for this as it helps you find more images you might like based on the ones you’ve already pinned. This should help them decide what they want as well as what they definitely don’t want.
I always suggest finding pictures of people who have similar coloring and eye colors to them. As well as inspiration photos, I also ask them to bring along photos of how they would normally wear their own makeup, including on a night out. This will help me to get a better understanding of the style/ amount of makeup they’re used to. Lastly, some other things I suggest is wearing a white top or similar to mimic the colour of their wedding dress - even better if they can wear a top with a similar neckline to your dress. Bring along any jewellery or hair accessories they plan on wearing on the day, once we’ve completed the makeup we can then finish the look with their accessories to give them a better idea of how everything will look together!
DO YOU THINK IT IS WORTH DOING A TRIAL BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY? A trial is definitely recommended before the wed- ding day. The trial run gives us the chance to meet and get to know each other, I can then understand your style and likes and dislikes when it comes to makeup. At your trial I may give you some advice on beauty treatments to have and when to have them in the lead up to the wedding. I may also give you some product recommendations or tweaks to make to your skincare routine so we can get the best makeup application on the wedding day. As well as all these things, by having a trial, on the wedding morning you can sit back, relax and enjoy the morning with your closest friends and family without us talking through each product I’m going to use.
WHAT IS A BRIDE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY WANT? HOW CAN THEY GET INSPIRED? There’s so many ways to get inspiration. We could look at celebrities you love the style of, especially those with similar characteristics to you - we can look at their red carpet looks and work out what you like and what you dislike. Once you’ve chosen your wedding dress we can look at the style of that whether its more a boho or classic style we can take a look at how that can be matched with your make- up look.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCTS TO USE FOR BRIDAL MAKEUP? For Bridal makeup, my tip to get the most flawless finish that will last all day is to apply the products in thin layers. I love using cream products such as bronzer, blusher and highlighter to add shape and dimension to the face but then I will always go in and set them with a powder product so they won’t transfer and will stay in place. My favourite cream bronzers are by the brand Refy, they blend like a dream and give a soft focus finish to the skin. I also use a lot of Charlotte Tilbury products in my make- up kit; some favourites are the beauty light wands, they give the most gorgeous dewy blush glow to the cheeks and I cannot do a makeup look without using the airbrush flawless setting powder - this is the best powder to smooth pores and stop any excess oils from disturbing the makeup throughout the day - and it really does give a airbrush look to the make- up! I like using a lighter shade underneath the eyes to brighten and a darker shade on the skin to sculpt the cheekbones and temples, this looks incredible in photos.
AS FAR AS TIMING- HOW CAN THE BRIDAL PARTY BEST PREPARE THEMSELVES FOR THE MORNING OF THE WEDDING? I always suggest having a hair and makeup sched- ule to make sure everything will run smoothly. After my Bride has had a trial I will send a makeup schedule over so she can see how long it’ll take me to set up and what order the Bridal party will have their makeup done. In terms of timings I always ask my Brides if they plan on doing certain things in the morning such as: present giving, a dress reveal to the Bridal party etc! This is so I can make sure I allow enough time in my schedule for these things to take place without affecting the amount of time each person has in the makeup chair. I suggest the Bride speaks with their photographer and see’s what time they like them all hair and makeup ready so they can get some shots before leaving for the ceremony. If the Bride isn’t having a photographer or isn’t having staged shots before, then as a rule of thumb having hair and makeup finished an hour before the ceremony should be plenty of time to get into their dresses, pack their handbags and have a final glass of champagne to celebrate!
